A high dietary fiber intake is recommended due to the beneficial effects of the degradation on (colonic) health, increase of stool volume, shorter transit time, production of short chain fatty acids and a decrease of colonic pH. Besides the colonic effects, dietary fibers are well-known for their effect on satiety and fullness observation, frequently resulting in lower food intake than without dietary fiber (Pasman et al., 1997).
In the present study the dietary fiber effects of NUTRIOSE® FB, a food dextrin, were examined. Especially the gastrointestinal (GI) tolerance as well as the effect on body weight (BW) and food intake were studied.
In a previous study the effect of different doses (10-80 g/day) of NUTRIOSE® FB for one week were tested at GI tolerance (Ellen van den Heuvel et al, in press).
The results revealed that for long-term, intake of 30â€"45 grams daily should be studied, to examine GI complaints.
CONCLUSION
Long-term supplementation of 30 and 45 g of the dextrin NUTRIOSE® FB was well tolerated.
The tendency found on body weight maintenance with NUTRIOSE® FB might be promising for weight gain prevention, although no effect on food intake or satiety scores were found.
