Public Nutrition Development Chine - Conference on Prebiotics - Peking, China - 16-17th Nov. 2007
The prebiotic-like Nutriose® soluble fiber, may be a safe and promising treatment for IBS patients.
The prevalence of life-style related diseases is continuing to gather pace in China and public authorities and health professionals are following developments closely and putting the nutritional qualities of foods to the test. To be in line with directives and provide the most innovative health ingredients to food manufacturers, Roquette communicates regularly with nutrition experts on the latest developments in food, health and economy. It was a great opportunity for Roquette to join the Prebiotic Conference organized by the Public Nutrition Development China Association and to give a conference on “The impacts of an indigestible oligosaccharide on gut comfort”.
The conference highlighted the clinically proven benefits of colonic fermentation to relieve people suffering from gut discomfort such as abdominal pain, constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the most common gastrointestinal disorder, affecting 23% of the Chinese population1 and characterized by abdominal pain and infraclinical intestinal inflammation. Fiber supplementation is a frequent treatment option in IBS, but the roles of fibers on intestinal pain and inflammation remain poorly known. During the conference, the results of an in vivo mice study2 on the impact of NUTRIOSE® on intestinal well-being and immunity maintenance were introduced.

The study concludes that NUTRIOSE® significantly improved biological markers of abdominal pain and inflammation in mice. Such results advance our understanding of the effects of fiber on intestinal disorders and suggest that the prebiotic-like soluble fiber NUTRIOSE® may be a safe and promising treatment for IBS patients.
