A roundtable discussion organized by the Asia Pacific Clinical Nutrition Society and Zhejiang University was held on 21-22 November 2009 in Hangzhou, China, to provide updated information on dietary fiber and human health. |
The roundtable discussion included 6 sections. The first one focused on definition, resources, classification, analysis, and intake status in China.
The four following sessions discussed the effects of dietary fibers and prebiotics on intestinal health, body weight control, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular protection.
On this occasion, Roquette presented NUTRIOSE® benefits in colon wellbeing, weight / satiety management and metabolic syndrome risk management. The last part of the discussion cast a light on current and future regulation and health claims related to functional food and nutraceuticals.
Experts in nutrition sharing expertise and experience
Among the attendees, 3 key international experts were sharing expertise and experience and about 40 Chinese experts in the field of nutrition and regulation took an active part either by presenting their research on dietary fiber or by discussing China's trends in terms of dietary fibre intake in correlation with non-communicable chronic disorders. Around 20 young scientists showed high interest discussions.
Key nutritional messages
Some key messages can be remembered from these 2 fruitful days:
- The dietary fibre intake (12.5-13g/d) is below the recommendation (25-30g/d) in China.
- Dietary fibres have shown clear benefits to prevent or help to manage non-communicable chronic diseases such as obesity, metabolic disorder, or colon well-being.
- People should increase their dietary fiber intake by consumption of a variety of foods, including vegetables, fruits and whole grains.
- Consumers should get access to more education to establish healthy eating behavior accompanied by the development of a variety of new products with high dietary fibre in the food industry
Considering the potential of dietary fibre in the preservation of health and non-communicable disease risk reduction, further research in this field has to be encouraged within the scientific community.
NUTRIOSE® is a soluble dietary fiber supplement : which enables healthy eating through fiber enrichment and sugar substitution reducing the daily calorie intake.
